Allen is an author, editor, poet, critic and writing tutor as well as a long-standing, active member of the British Fantasy Society. He is also a regular contributor to The British Fantasy Society Journal and The British Fantasy Society e-Newsletter as well as being a familiar face at FantasyCon. He has also won the British Fantasy Society award for Best Anthology in 2006 as editor of The Elastic Book Of Numbers (Elastic Press).
