Here are the rules:
The Story
1. Your story must be based on the fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast.” While you are at liberty to retell the story in exciting and original ways, the core of the tale must be recognizable. Include as many of the classic themes as you can, though you may feel free to switch them up and surprise us! We are eager to see any and all genres.
2. Your story must be between 5,000 and 20,000 words long.
Submission
You may CLICK HERE to download the PDF file, which contains the submission form detailing the expectations and rights of both the publisher and the author. If you choose to submit a story for consideration, you may send a signed copy of the form and the submission fee of $10 to:
Rooglewood Press
P.O. Box 26423
Raleigh, NC 27611
We will accept the submission fee as cash or check from US residents. We are willing to work with Paypal for international authors only. (For details, write to us at info@rooglewoodpress.com.)
You must include your email address in the space provided at the bottom of the submission form. If you do not, we will not be able to contact you to request your manuscript. Be certain to print your email address clearly. If we cannot read your address, we will not be able to communicate with you. Once we have received your submission form and fee, we will let you know (via the email address provided in the submission form) that we are ready to receive your story.
The story must be emailed to us as a Microsoft Word document. No other formats will be accepted. We do not accept printed manuscripts.
If you get ideas for several stories, you are invited to submit more than one story for consideration. A submission form and fee will have to be submitted for each story.
No alterations will be made to the submission form. Any form sent in with alterations made by the submitting author will be automatically disqualified, and no refunds will be given.
Submission fees will not be returned even if the author chooses not to submit her or his story.
Deadline
Submission forms must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, December 16, 2014.
You will have until December 31, 2014 to email your manuscripts to us. Please send your stories as soon as you are able so that our readers are not deluged all at once!
The Winners
A panel of readers working on behalf of Rooglewood Press will read each submission, and Rooglewood Press editors will select five winners to be announced by author name and story title on March 1, 2015. Each winner will receive:
1. A $75.00 cash prize.
2. The opportunity to work one-on-one with Rooglewood Press editors to polish and perfect the selected story.
3. An individually designed title page within the volume to match the selected story.
4. An author-bio feature within the volume with links to personal blogs and/or websites.
5. The opportunity to feature advertisements in the back of the volume for other published works of fiction.
6. A print copy of the complete book for her/his bookshelf.
The Book
The Five Enchanted Roses collection will be available in print and e-book copies come Summer 2015. It will be for sale online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
CLARIFICATIONS:
In an effort to avoid having to answer these questions multiple times, Rooglewood Press offers the following list of clarifications:
1. The winners will receive their $75.00 cash prizes. No further fees or royalties will be paid.
2. The second clause detailed in the submission form is for the protection of Rooglewood Press. We do not want to see stories from our collections slightly modified and published elsewhere. This clause is to secure our exclusive rights to publish the story. If a winning author wants to discuss reacquiring rights to her or his story at a later date, we will be happy to enter into discussion.
3. As stated above, we do not accept manuscripts in any format other than Microsoft Word documents. If you do not have Microsoft Word please consider visiting your local library and converting your file to Word for submission.
4. As detailed in the submission form, if we do not accept your story, all rights to that story automatically revert to you to do with as you please. We lay no claim on any story not accepted as one of the five winners.
5. We absolutely require a signature on the submission form. Typed-in names will not suffice. If you are a minor (under 18), we require your legal guardian’s signature. Any submission form mailed in with a typed-in name on the signature line will be automatically disqualified, and submission fees will not be returned.
6. Please do not send us a printed manuscript. Your story will be read by several readers while being considered for this collection. We need a Microsoft Word file so that we may easily share the document among all the readers as necessary.
