Maine Review's Rocky Coast Contest! - September 15th, 2014

The Review is currently accepting entries from published and unpublished writers for the Rocky Coast writing contest, which offers a First Prize of $150 and a Second Prize of $50. We look for quality writing with a strong point of view. All genres are eligible for the contest. Please see our guidelines below. We adhere to the CLMP code of ethics for administering a literary contest.

Artists: The Maine Review is proud to feature the work of a Maine artist on each issue's cover. If you're a Maine artist and would like to have your work considered for the cover, please contact us here.

Writers' Guidelines:

Format:

For short fiction, creative nonfiction, and essays, all entries must be in a 12-point standard serif font such as Times New Roman or similar, and double-spaced with pages numbered. Send your submission in Microsoft Word-compatible format (Word document preferred over PDFs). The title of the document should be the title of the story or essay. Do not put your name on the story or essay. Include your name, contact information, and title(s) on a separate cover page.

Poetry:

Format is open. You may submit up to three poems per entry fee. All entries should be sent in Microsoft Word-compatible format as above. Do not put your name on the poems. Please do include your name, contact information, and title(s) of works on a separate cover page.

Word Limits:

Short fiction, essays, and creative nonfiction: 1,500 words
Poetry: 60 lines

Copyrights:

All submissions must be your own original work. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere. You are also responsible for notifying any other literary magazines you may have submitted your piece to
if we notify you that we'd like to publish it. We will respond to your submission within six weeks.

Submissions can be previously published; however, you must own the rights to republish in the event that we publish your piece. The Maine Review does not retain any rights to your work once it has been published. At this time, we pay in contributor copies.

If you have an unpublished black-and-white photo that you would like to include with your submission, please make a note on your cover page, and we will contact you.

Entry Fees:

The entry fee for all contests is $10 per entry. At this time we accept electronic submissions only. There is no limit to the number of entries you may submit. You can submit up to three poems per entry fee in the Poetry category.

Every writer who submits an entry will receive a free electronic copy of the inaugural issue of theReview. In addition, two entrants from each genre category will be selected in a random drawing to receive a firstwriter.com voucher worth $15, allowing them to take out a free subscription to firstwriter.com, providing access to details of hundreds of publishers, literary agents, writing competitions, and magazines.

NOTE:

If your payment is made under a name other than your own (for example, as a business entity with no apparent connection to you), please make a note on your cover page as to what name your payment should be credited to.

Winners of the contest will be published in the Review, and all submissions will be considered for publication. Notifications of winners will be via an e-mail to all contestants and posting on this website. Entrants will also receive an e-mail notification when each quarterly issue becomes available. Entrants are not added to any mailing lists, and we never sell or share your information.

Submissions for the Fall issue will close on September 15th, 2014. Thanks again for your interest in submitting to the Maine Review!
