The Review is currently accepting entries from published and unpublished writers for the Rocky Coast writing contest, which offers a First Prize of $150 and a Second Prize of $50. We look for quality writing with a strong point of view. All genres are eligible for the contest. Please see our guidelines below. We adhere to the CLMP code of ethics for administering a literary contest.
Artists: The Maine Review is proud to feature the work of a Maine artist on each issue's cover. If you're a Maine artist and would like to have your work considered for the cover, please contact us here.
Writers' Guidelines:
Format:
For short fiction, creative nonfiction, and essays, all entries must be in a 12-point standard serif font such as Times New Roman or similar, and double-spaced with pages numbered. Send your submission in Microsoft Word-compatible format (Word document preferred over PDFs). The title of the document should be the title of the story or essay. Do not put your name on the story or essay. Include your name, contact information, and title(s) on a separate cover page.
Poetry:
Format is open. You may submit up to three poems per entry fee. All entries should be sent in Microsoft Word-compatible format as above. Do not put your name on the poems. Please do include your name, contact information, and title(s) of works on a separate cover page.

All submissions must be your own original work. Simultaneous submissions are okay, but please let us know if your submission is accepted elsewhere. You are also responsible for notifying any other literary magazines you may have submitted your piece to

Every writer who submits an entry will receive a free electronic copy of the inaugural issue of theReview. In addition, two entrants from each genre category will be selected in a random drawing to receive a firstwriter.com voucher worth $15, allowing them to take out a free subscription to firstwriter.com, providing access to details of hundreds of publishers, literary agents, writing competitions, and magazines.
NOTE:
If your payment is made under a name other than your own (for example, as a business entity with no apparent connection to you), please make a note on your cover page as to what name your payment should be credited to.
Winners of the contest will be published in the Review, and all submissions will be considered for publication.
