The 2014 Overland Victoria University Short Story Prize for New and Emerging Writers

The competition aims to discover the finest in original short fiction by new writers across Australia and New Zealand – that is, writers who have not yet published a book with commercial distribution (see the prize guidelines for details). With a $6000 first prizeand two runner-up prizes of $1000, the award is the most lucrative of its kind in both countries. All three winning stories will also be published in Overland magazine.

The competition closes midnight, 31 August 2014. Winners will be announced inOverland 217.

This year, there are four ways to enter the competition: as a new or current subscriber, as a non-subscriber or as a Victoria University student.

New subscriber – $56

(Includes $12 entry fee and $44 subscription)

Writers can subscribe to Overland for one year (four issues) at a discounted rate, and enter the competition at the special subscriber rate. Take out a new subscription and enter the competition here.


Current subscriber – $12

Non-subscriber – $20

There is no entry fee for students currently enrolled at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. Victoria University students enter the competition here.
