The Contest

Organised by the Yeovil Community Arts Association, here is an opportunity to enter four very different categories of writing. Aspiring writers throughout the world are invited to enter this prestigious writing competition.
All genres are welcome.

Category 1 Novel
Requirement : Synopsis and Opening Chapters (combined maximum 15,000 words)
Judge : Victoria Hobbs – literary agent with A M Heath
Prizes : 1st £1000 2nd £250 3rd £100
Entry Fee : £11


Category 2 Short Story
Requirement : Maximum 2,000 words
Judge : Santa Montefiore – renowned novelist
Prizes : 1st £500 2nd £200 3rd £100
Entry Fee : £6


Category 3 Poetry
Requirement : Maximum of 40 Lines
Judge : Esther Morgan – acclaimed poet
Prizes : 1st £500 2nd £200 3rd £100
Entry Fee : £6 one poem; £9 for two; £11 for three


Category 4 Writing Without Restrictions
Requirement : You write it – we’ll read it. Details are at end of General Rules
Judge : The Yeovil Community Arts Association committee
Prizes : 1st £100 2nd £50 3rd £30
Entry Fee : £5


Local Prize Western Gazette Best Local Writer Award
Requirement : for a short-listed entry, and entrant lives in Western Gazettedistribution area.
Judge : The Yeovil Community Arts Association committee
Prizes : £100



The writing competition runs from 1st January and closes on 31st May each year.




Submit your Work(s) Online, and pay the Fee Online

There are 3 stages to entering your Work(s) Online:
  • You first Register your Name and Contact details with Yeovil Prize
  • You may then submit your Work(s) by pasting your text into an Online form
  • You then pay your entry Fee via PayPal
After registering your name and contact details you will be sent an email containing simple instructions on how to confirm your email address - it is a very simple process. You may register at any time before you submit your work. To enter your manuscript you will access the Online Service by 'logging on' using your email address and the password that you will have set up during registration. When you have submitted your text you will receive an email acknowledgment. Payment of the entry fee via PayPal is also straightforward, and very secure. If you already have a PayPal account you may use that, if not you can either set one up or just simply pay the fee using your credit or debit card. PayPal is a very large and secure online payment service used by over 150 million people across the world. Other features of the Online Service allow you to change your details and send us a message.
