poetic Republic 2015 Poetry Competitions - Deadline 30th April 2015 #seanocarolan #poetry #writing
2015 Poetic Republic Poetry Prize | Single poem prize£2,000Portfolio prize (two poems)£1,000
Qualification for the portfolio prize requires two entries.
The prize is judged by the participants through an anonymous peer review process. The Judging will take place over 7 weeks in May 2015 and June 2015.
Participants read each other’s work in small groups of 12 poems in a three round process. The combined effect is very powerful. In the final (third) round, everyone reads the shortlisted 12 poems.
During judging, participants have access to groups of poems but poems are not published on the website.
From each group of 12 poems participants select their preferred 4 poems and leave a short comment against their choices; draft comments may be saved for editing and later submission.
Commenting is a valuable part of the process but it is also fun and fascinating. We have set out some thoughts about comments which may be useful.
Participants can read comments left against their own poems after the judging has finished.
The eBook publication will include 48 poems together with a selection of the best or most interesting comments. To be shortlisted or included in the publication entrants must have taken part in the first two rounds of judging.
The selection of poems for publication will be made by the contribution of all the participants. The published poets will be invited to provide background details for inclusion in the publication. The shortlisted poets will be invited to make the selections of comments for publication.
Poems may be on any subject; poetry or prose poetry; maximum 42 lines; previously unpublished work; £7 per poem.
After submission, poems may be edited up to the final deadline for the submission of entries.
There is no restriction on the number of poems that may be entered.
See poetry competition rules for full details. See our homepage and our about page for further details of context in terms of philosophy, history and finance.
The competition is run on a not-for-profit basis.
Report on Last Year
The 2014 poetry prize attracted 1142 entries (607 participants) from over 40 countries. Entries were received from Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cyprus, France, Gambia, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Korea, Malaysia, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Saint Helena, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand, UK, Ukraine and USA.
Some thoughts from last year’s participants:
“…an interesting and enjoyable opportunity to clarify and prioritise my own preferences in style and substance.”
“I found this the most difficult judging over the last three years.”
“Well, as always it is challenging to make comments and to judge the work of others, but a rewarding and educational process as you consider what it is that makes a poem sing.”
“I like it, partly because we know no preconceived publisher's template can determine the outcome, partly because it has me read a wider range of poetry than I usually would and partly because it renews my motivation to keep writing.”
“I love the process of this contest. I judge contests for the journal I work for, and it can be very difficult to sift through hundreds of submissions. I think it's ingenious to employ the general consensus of the contestants involved…”
Thank you to all the participants for taking part and providing constructive feedback and thank you to the individuals and organisations who have kindly offered support in the promotion of the competition.
