Lancaster Writing Award

After the success of our 2015 awards, this prestigious writing competition returns for its fourth year. In association with Cake Magazine and The Flash Journal Lancaster (both published in collaboration with the Department of English and Creative Writing and the Lancaster Writing Programme) we are excited to recognise emerging writing talent in literary criticism, prose fiction and poetry. Prizes will be awarded in each of these three categories.

First Prize - £200 and publication in Cake Magazine
Second Prize - £100
Third Prize - £50
Highly Commended - £25

*international students in the final two years of their secondary education are welcome to enter the awards, as are home-educated students aged 16-18.
Inspiration

The Department of English and Creative Writing and the Lancaster Writing Programme have strong links with literary life and history in the Lake District and with the Wordsworth Trust. Current students and staff can make visits to Dove Cottage to examine manuscripts and to be creatively inspired by a landscape that nourishes new writing and research in fresh and exciting ways.

‘the lonely roads
Were schools to me in which I daily read
With most delight the passions of mankind’
(William Wordsworth, The Prelude, XII, 163-165)

You can respond to Wordsworth’s words EITHER by examining the relationship between literature and place in two texts of your choice, OR by using the quotation as a prompt for a piece of creative writing.

We’re also very happy to accept works of prose fiction, criticism or poetry that aren’t prompted by this theme. You can even submit something you’ve worked on as part of your coursework at school or college. Surprise us!

You may enter in more than one category, and write in any style you wish. All entries are judged anonymously.

The closing date for the competition is 28th February 2016.
