The prize is named in honour of the distinguished Australian poet Ron Pretty, who founded Five Islands Press in 1986, and has himself published eight collections and four chapbooks; most recently, What the Afternoon Knows (Pitt Street Poetry, 2013).
As a publisher at Five Islands, Ron published over 230 books before retiring in 2007. Since this time, Five Islands has maintained its commitment to publishing fine Australian poetry, including the work of emerging and established poets.
The prize will be awarded to a single poem of up to 30 lines, and is open to anyone over the age of 18 years, including overseas applicants.
Entry fee is $25 for the first poem and $10 for subsequent poems. There are no limits on entries. Online submissions only.
A longlist will be announced on the website and longlisted poets notified on 21 January 2017. The shortlist will be announced on the website on 31 January 2017. First, second and third prizes will be awarded by Ron Pretty at an awards night on 3 March 2017.
