Now open for submissions …

The daffodils are out, the supermarkets are full of chocolate eggs, and there was even half an hour of sunshine last Thursday. This can only mean one thing: our spring reading period is now open.

For this submission call, we're not going to run a specific theme. Instead, we'll be concentrating on general submissions, open to any of the themes and genres that we feature in our anthologies. So if you'd like to submit something to us, just take a look through a recent volume, and send us whatever you think makes for a great Fiction Desk story.

Submissions are open until 30 June, and you can find out more about the submission process below.

Between now and June, we'll also be revisiting some past anthologies and looking at their stories, as well as thinking about some of the challenges and rewards of short story writing in general.

News of our next anthology

If you're a regular reader of our anthologies, you might have noticed that our new volume has been much delayed during the pandemic. The good news it that it's nearly ready, and it will be off to press in the next few weeks. It's been a frustrating wait: we've been sitting on some fantastic stories from both Fiction Desk regulars and new writers, but the good news is that we'll be sharing them with you very soon! Look our for full details in an upcoming newsletter.

How to submit

Available anthologies from TFD

If you're ready to send us a story, here's our simple three-step guide to submitting stories to The Fiction Desk:

1) Read one of our anthologies. Every publisher has a different approach and style. If you read our anthologies, you'll have a much better idea of the kind of story we're likely to publish, and an advantage over the people who don't do their research before submitting. Our latest volume is Somewhere This Way. (You'll also find all of our anthologies available on Kindle.)

2) Read our submission guidelines for useful information like word counts, rights, and what we pay. (It's generally a good idea to check these sorts of details before submitting work anywhere.)

3) Send us your best stories! All submissions should be made through our online form, which you'll find here.
